Aloha Dana Point Camp Families:

It is with much sadness that we inform you that our Dana Point camp scheduled for June 21, 2017 (tomorrow) has been postponed.  As many of you that have been to our events over the past 20 years know well – the safety of our events and the safety of our surf crew and your little surfers is always our top priority.  With that in mind (and after much consultation with lifeguards and other marine experts) we have made the difficult decision to reschedule the event.

While we have had many inquiries over the past weeks about the Orange County shark sightings, nothing in the weeks leading up to the event or in our discussions with beach personnel have indicated that there was any increased level of concern for Doheny or for our scheduled event.  However, we were informed this morning that over the past two days a couple of great white sharks have been swimming through the line-up – both unusually close to surfers and right in the exact area that we hold our event.  After discussing with authorities and with many from our extended team we came to the conclusion that we could not in good conscience look everyone in the eye and tell you that it would be safe.  A number of city beaches have closed because of this and the state beach at Doheny is on “advisory”, which means that they are nearing a potential closure as well.  Additionally, all but one of the summer surf camps at Doheny have cancelled their weekly camps.

We sincerely apologize for the late notice and the inconvenience that this will cause, but we think of each Surfers Healing kid as being as much a part of our family as they are yours and given the activity over the last couple days, we would not let our kids go in the water right now.

We will work with the beach authorities on rescheduling the event towards the end of summer (possibly September) – we will keep you all posted on updates as a replacement camp develops

Mahalo for your understanding,

The Surfers Healing Crew
